Hypnotherapy For OCD
If intrusive thoughts or obsessive thinking are wearing you down, hypnosis can help you find some calm.
At The Hypnosis Clinic, hypnotherapy has real, meaningful value to offer people living with OCD — particularly around the anxiety and nervous system activation that so often sits underneath obsessive thinking. If a thought has ever looped round and round in your mind, or you’ve felt driven to check something again and again even when part of you knows it isn’t necessary, you’ll understand how exhausting this can be.
I’ll be straightforward about where that value lies: the gold-standard, NICE-recommended treatment for OCD is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy with Exposure and Response Prevention (CBT with ERP), sometimes alongside medication. Hypnotherapy works best as a powerful complement to that treatment, not a replacement for it.
Used this way, it can make a genuine difference to how manageable the whole process feels. We work together as a team; hypnotist and client, turning down the background anxiety that fuels the whole cycle.
Today could be the start of finding some calm.
Hypnotherapy for OCD:
Your step-by-step guide to taking control
Calming baseline anxiety, so intrusive thoughts have less to attach to
Reducing anticipatory anxiety around ERP work
Supporting sleep, when the mind is otherwise unoccupied
Building a sense of psychological distance from thoughts
Experiencing a thought as passing through, rather than something urgent
Reinforcing self-compassion around having intrusive thoughts
Working hand-in-hand with CBT and ERP
Turning down the background hum that fuels the whole cycle
Helping the whole process feel more manageable
Hello, I’m Jonathan Garside. To find out more about how hypnotherapy for OCD and intrusive thoughts can support you, book an appointment.
We work with clients managing every kind of OCD-related challenge, from obsessive thoughts and checking behaviours, to the anxiety and hypervigilance that sits underneath them. Whatever the cycle looks like for you, we can help turn down the anxiety that drives it.
At your initial free consultation, you can ask all the questions you want about how hypnotherapy can help you, and it gives us the opportunity to find out more about your experience of OCD and any treatment you’re already receiving. It is at this stage that we can work out how many sessions you will need.
Generally, I see most people for 2-4 sessions and the cost is £250 per one hour session. However, that reduces to £225 per hour when you buy a package of four sessions, saving you £100.
If you’d like some further reading on OCD and intrusive thoughts, have a look at our blog.
OCD affects an estimated 750,000 people in the UK at any one time — around 1.2% of the population — with about half of all cases classed as severe. Reported OCD among 16 to 24 year-olds has more than tripled over the past decade, rising from 1.8% in 2014 to 5.7% in 2023/24. Despite this, OCD remains widely under-diagnosed, partly due to stigma and partly because people don’t recognise their own experience in the “neat and tidy” stereotype so often portrayed in the media.
If you think you may have OCD and haven’t been assessed, your GP is the right starting point, and OCD-UK offers excellent, practical guidance on the condition and the NHS treatment pathway. If you’re already receiving CBT with ERP or medication, hypnotherapy can be a valuable addition to that care — working directly on the anxiety underneath your symptoms, alongside the treatment your clinical team has recommended, to help you get the most out of it.
We understand that OCD and intrusive thoughts show up differently for everyone; what the cycle looks like for one person may be entirely different for another. That’s why the support we offer is unique to you, working alongside whatever treatment your clinical team has recommended.
It’s just one of the reasons that makes us different: we take time to listen and find out what’s driving your anxiety, and what genuine calm would actually look like in your life.
From here, we progress, step-by-step, alongside your wider treatment, to find and build the calm and psychological distance for you to feel more in charge of your thoughts. For now, and the rest of your longer, happier, healthier life.
Of course, this may be all new to you, so have a look at some of the comments other people have been kind enough to write below.

It’s almost mystifying how much two treatments have shifted things but I’m choosing not to try and work out how it’s worked but just to be grateful it has. Would recommend to anyone who has something they need to think differently about. Plus he is very kind and puts you at total ease.Posted on Google Simona RizzoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I started hypnotherapy curious about its benefits as an alternative to traditional therapy. I often found my feelings clouded my decisions, diluting my effectiveness at work. After four sessions with Jonathan, I feel genuinely changed, not just with a renewed sense of calm, but with real perspective. While hypnotherapy itself had an impact, it would have been far less effective without the connection Jonathan creates the moment you walk in. I valued our chats and his advice as much as the hypnotherapy itself. I'd recommend the sessions, but also recommend arriving with an open mind, ready to receive, but also to find your own way to apply what you learn. The work doesn't finish when you shut the door; it continues in every moment after. At the end of the day, change comes from us. But Jonathan provided me with strong tools to face challenges in more effective and rewarding ways.Posted on Google Megan GowingTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had hypnotherapy with Johnathan to stop smoking/vaping. It’s a normal feeling to feel nervous and apprehensive prior to your first therapy session, disussing all your personal thoughts and feelings and ‘negative flaws’, to someone you have never met. However from our first session, Jonathan made me feel so comfortable, at ease and that there was zero judgement being passed, no matter what I would have said to him. I had many doubts prior to the sessions, as to how effective it would be, however I am simply amazed at the progress I have made. Although recovery is largely dependent on the client seeking the support and the dedication and openness to the process itself, Jonathan was extremely supportive, collaborative and person centred, and has made me feel so confident at ‘going at this alone’. He showed so much genuine curiosity, care, and compassion. I couldn’t have asked for more from the therapy and couldn’t recommend him enough.Posted on Google Marcia BrophyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had a really positive experience with my hypnosis sessions with Johnathan. From the moment we began, I felt comfortable, safe, and well guided. Johnathan took time to understand my goals and explained the process clearly, which helped me relax and trust the experience. During the sessions I was surprised by how natural and calming it felt. I stayed aware the whole time, yet deeply relaxed, and the suggestions really resonated with what I’ve been wanting to change. In the days since, I’ve noticed real improvements - it feels like something gently shifted in the right direction. I would absolutely recommend Johnathan to anyone who’s curious about hypnosis or looking for supportive, effective personal growth.Posted on Google Aishah JacobsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Was worth every penny because I’m now smoke free for around 3/4 years now. This is one of the best things I could have done for myself. I highly recommend this treatment to everyone struggling with anythingPosted on Google Justyna DuranTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had hypnotherapy sessions with Jonathan for my fear of flying and anxiety, and I am so grateful for the results. From the very first session, I felt completely at ease thanks to Jonathan’s calm, reassuring, and compassionate approach. He created a safe and supportive environment that allowed me to fully relax and trust the process. After the hypnotherapy and listening to the recorded session Jonathan provided for me, my flight anxiety is completely gone. I now feel relaxed, calm, and at ease when flying—something I never thought would be possible. The shift has been incredible and has had a positive impact on my overall wellbeing. I would wholeheartedly recommend Jonathan to anyone dealing with anxiety or fears. His work has genuinely changed my life.Posted on Google Thom WillTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. From the very first session Jonathan created a calm, supportive, and non-judgemental space that made it easy to be open and honest about the things I wanted to change. The work we did together across four sessions helped me address some long-standing compulsive patterns and shift how I respond in situations that would previously have felt difficult or overwhelming. I now feel noticeably calmer, more grounded, and much more in control in everyday life. I’ve been in situations recently that would once have felt challenging, and I’ve handled them with a sense of ease and confidence that’s genuinely new for me. Jonathan’s approach is very positive and forward-looking. You leave each session feeling lighter and more assured, like you’re standing a little taller. The personalised recording he created has also been incredibly helpful, and it’s reassuring to know I have something practical I can return to whenever I need to reinforce the work. I’m very grateful for the experience and would highly recommend Jonathan to anyone looking to make meaningful change.Posted on Google DENİZ ULUKÖYTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I found Jonathan during a very difficult period in my life, and he genuinely changed my perspective. His calm, warm, and kind presence made me feel safe from the very first session. With his guidance, I learned how to regulate myself, find clarity, and step into a version of myself that feels grounded and hopeful. He wasn’t only helpful in therapy itself, he was also incredibly encouraging about everything happening in my life, always listening with patience and offering thoughtful insight. Every session felt like a place of calm, support, and genuine care, and I’m honestly sad that my four sessions have come to an end, because being there brought me so much peace. I am truly grateful, and I know that the strength and balance I gained with his help will continue to guide me forward.Posted on Google Samuel GotleyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I really enjoyed working with Jonathan and was amazed at the ease with which he took me into hypnosis and applied the areas I had given him that I wanted to work on. His office is clean and makes you feel relaxed and he is very professional and intuitive. Highly recommend.

The cost of each programme is £150.
