Hypnotherapy for Performance Anxiety

September 22, 2026

Whether it’s the moment before you walk on stage, stand up to present, step onto the pitch, or sit down for a big exam, performance anxiety has a way of undoing weeks of preparation in seconds. Racing heart, shaky hands, a mind that suddenly goes blank — it can feel like your own body is working against you at exactly the wrong moment.

I’m Jonathan Garside, an Associate of The Royal Society of Medicine and a member of The National Hypnotherapy Society, with 30 years’ experience as a clinical hypnotherapist practising in London, Singapore, Sydney and New York, now based on Regent Street. Performance anxiety — in all its forms — is one of the most common reasons clients come to see me, and it’s also one of the areas where hypnotherapy has a genuinely strong track record.

Performance Anxiety Is More Common Than You’d Think

Fear of public speaking, or glossophobia, is estimated to affect as many as 70% of people to some degree, and research on social and performance anxiety puts the figure experiencing meaningful performance-related fear at somewhere between 14% and 25% of the general population. It affects people at every level, too — well-known performers including opera singers and stadium-filling musicians have spoken openly about battling stage fright throughout their careers, so if you feel it before a client presentation or a five-a-side match, you’re in good company.

The British Medical Association has recognised hypnotherapy as an effective approach for anxiety-related conditions, and performance anxiety — being fundamentally about the body’s stress response getting triggered at the wrong moment — responds particularly well to it.

Why Your Body Betrays You Under Pressure

Performance anxiety is your nervous system’s threat response firing in a situation that isn’t actually dangerous. The racing heart, the mental blank, the shaky voice — these are all classic fight-or-flight symptoms, just triggered by an audience or a scoreboard instead of a genuine physical threat. The trouble is, once your body has learned to associate a particular situation (a stage, an exam hall, a penalty spot) with that threat response, it tends to fire the same way every time, regardless of how well-prepared you actually are.

This is exactly the kind of learned, automatic response that hypnotherapy is well suited to working with directly.

How Hypnotherapy Helps With Performance Anxiety

Hypnotherapy works with the unconscious associations driving your stress response, rather than trying to reason your way past it. Sessions typically focus on:

  • Calming the physical stress response, so your body stops overreacting to the situation before you’ve even walked in the room.
  • Mental rehearsal, using vivid visualisation to walk through your performance calmly and successfully — research shows the same muscles used in a physical performance can activate during hypnotic rehearsal, which is part of why this technique is so widely used in sports psychology.
  • Reframing unhelpful beliefs, replacing thoughts like “I always freeze under pressure” with a more accurate, confident self-image.
  • Building genuine confidence, rather than just masking nerves, so it holds up on the day rather than cracking under pressure.
  • Separating preparation from performance anxiety, since often the fear itself — not a lack of ability — is what’s holding someone back.

This approach works across contexts: public speaking and presentations, sport, music and performing arts, interviews, and high-pressure professional situations generally. If exam anxiety specifically is what’s bringing you here, I’ve written more on that in a dedicated piece on hypnotherapy for exam anxiety.

What to Expect From a Session

You remain fully aware and in control throughout hypnosis — it’s a state of deeply focused relaxation, not unconsciousness. We’ll start with a conversation about exactly what your performance anxiety looks like: when it strikes, what it feels like physically, and what’s at stake for you. From there, sessions often include visualisation of you succeeding in the specific situation you’re facing, alongside broader work on your stress response and self-belief. Many clients see meaningful change in just two to four sessions, particularly when there’s a specific event to prepare for.

A Client’s Story

“I’d avoided every opportunity to speak in front of my team for years, even turning down a promotion because it involved presenting. By the time I came to see Jonathan I had a conference talk booked and genuine dread about it. The visualisation work made the biggest difference — by the third session I could picture myself actually doing it calmly, which I’d never been able to do before. The talk went better than I could have imagined, and for the first time I actually enjoyed being up there.” — D.R., Marylebone
