Perimenopause has a habit of arriving quietly and then taking over everything — sleep, mood, confidence, concentration — often years before anyone mentions the word “menopause” to you. If you’re lying awake at 3am wondering why you suddenly feel like a different person, or bracing for the next hot flush in an important meeting, you’re going through something real and well understood, even if it doesn’t always feel that way.
I’m Jonathan Garside, an Associate of The Royal Society of Medicine and a member of The National Hypnotherapy Society, with 30 years’ experience as a clinical hypnotherapist practising in London, Singapore, Sydney and New York, now based on Regent Street. Menopause and perimenopause are areas where hypnotherapy has a genuinely strong evidence base, particularly for hot flushes and sleep — this isn’t a fringe alternative, it’s backed by properly conducted clinical research.
The Evidence for Hypnotherapy Here Is Genuinely Strong
A randomised controlled trial of 187 postmenopausal women, funded by the US National Institutes of Health and published in the journal Menopause, found that five weekly sessions of clinical hypnosis reduced hot flush frequency by around 70–80%, with participants also reporting improved sleep. The Menopause Society has since highlighted research suggesting clinical hypnosis may be even more effective than CBT specifically for reducing hot flushes and improving related quality of life. This matters because, alongside hormone replacement therapy, options with this level of evidence behind them are relatively rare.
Perimenopause Brings More Than Hot Flushes
While hot flushes tend to get the most attention, perimenopause — the transition period that can last several years before periods stop altogether — often brings anxiety, low mood, brain fog, disrupted sleep, irritability and a real dip in confidence, sometimes before hot flushes even begin. Fluctuating hormones directly affect the nervous system and brain chemistry, which is why perimenopause can feel less like “a few uncomfortable symptoms” and more like your whole sense of self shifting under you. Many women describe feeling dismissed when they raise this with their GP, particularly if hot flushes haven’t started yet — which is exactly why perimenopause deserves its own conversation, separate from menopause itself.
If you haven’t already, it’s worth discussing your symptoms with your GP, who can talk through options including HRT, alongside any complementary support such as hypnotherapy.
How Hypnotherapy Helps With Menopause and Perimenopause
Hypnotherapy works by calming the nervous system’s stress response and helping the body regulate itself more effectively during this hormonal transition. Sessions often focus on:
- Reducing hot flush frequency and intensity, using techniques shown in clinical trials to help regulate the body’s temperature response.
- Improving sleep quality, addressing both the physical disruption of night sweats and the racing, anxious thoughts that often accompany them.
- Easing anxiety and mood swings, calming the heightened stress response that hormonal fluctuation can trigger.
- Supporting mental clarity, helping with the frustrating “brain fog” so many women describe during this transition.
- Rebuilding confidence, addressing the sense of losing touch with yourself that so often comes up during perimenopause.
What to Expect From a Session
You remain fully aware and relaxed throughout hypnosis — many women describe it as one of the few moments of genuine calm in an otherwise overstimulated nervous system. We’ll begin with a thorough conversation about your specific symptoms, whether you’re using HRT or other treatment, and what’s affecting you most. From there, a typical course runs to several sessions, often mirroring the length used in the clinical research on hot flushes.
A Client’s Story
“I was managing the hot flushes, just about, but it was the 3am anxiety and the brain fog at work that were really getting to me — I didn’t feel like myself at all. A few sessions in, I was sleeping properly again for the first time in months, and the constant background anxiety had settled right down. It didn’t fix everything, but it gave me back a sense of being in control of my own mind again.” — S.G., Marylebone
Hypnotherapy Alongside Your Wider Care
Hypnotherapy works well alongside HRT or other treatment your GP recommends — it isn’t an either/or choice. If you’d like a broader look at how hypnotherapy supports menopause symptoms more generally, I’ve also written about this here. The Menopause Society is also a well-respected resource for further reading on treatment options.
