Lying awake replaying the day, mentally drafting tomorrow’s to-do list at 2am, or feeling like your mind simply won’t stop even when your body is exhausted — if this sounds familiar, you’re far from alone. Burnout and chronic overthinking have become two of the defining struggles of modern working life, and they tend to arrive quietly, disguised as just “being busy,” until the exhaustion becomes impossible to ignore.
I’m Jonathan Garside, an Associate of The Royal Society of Medicine and a member of The National Hypnotherapy Society, with 30 years’ experience as a clinical hypnotherapist practising in London, Singapore, Sydney and New York, now based on Regent Street.
Burnout, racing thoughts and mental overwhelm are among the most common reasons people come to see me — and this is genuinely an area where hypnotherapy can make a real, tangible difference.
Burnout Has Become the UK’s Defining Workplace Issue
The scale of this problem is striking. Mental Health UK’s Burnout Report 2026 found that 91% of UK adults experienced high or extreme pressure or stress in the past year, and one in five workers needed time off due to stress-related mental health difficulties. Separately, Deloitte research found that 63% of UK employees now show at least one characteristic of burnout — up sharply from 51% in 2021. According to the Health and Safety Executive, work-related stress, depression and anxiety accounted for 22.1 million lost working days in Great Britain last year alone.
Unlike ordinary tiredness, burnout doesn’t resolve with a weekend off. It builds gradually — often over months — as ongoing demands consistently outpace someone’s ability to recover, eventually eroding motivation, confidence and wellbeing across every part of life, not just work.
Why Overthinking Feels Impossible to Switch Off
One of the most exhausting features of burnout and chronic stress is that the mind doesn’t clock off when the day ends. Racing thoughts, replaying conversations, rehearsing tomorrow’s problems — this happens because a chronically activated stress response keeps the brain scanning for threats even when there’s nothing left to actually do about them. The irony is that this mental “productivity” achieves nothing except stealing the rest you need to actually recover.
Over time, this creates a frustrating cycle: poor sleep makes the mind more reactive and less able to regulate itself, which fuels more overthinking, which further disrupts sleep — and the loop continues, often for months, before people seek help.
How Hypnotherapy Helps With Burnout and Overwhelm
Hypnotherapy works directly with the nervous system’s stress response, rather than simply encouraging you to “relax more” — advice that rarely works when your mind won’t stop racing long enough to try. Sessions typically focus on:
- Down-regulating the stress response, teaching your nervous system what genuine rest actually feels like again.
- Quietening racing thoughts, particularly at night, so your mind can switch off rather than continuing to “work” long after your body has stopped.
- Rebuilding a sustainable relationship with work, addressing the beliefs — often around needing to be constantly available or productive — that keep burnout patterns going.
- Restoring sleep quality, since poor sleep is both a symptom of burnout and one of the biggest obstacles to recovering from it.
- Building resilience for the return to normal life, so recovery holds up once you’re back in the situations that led to burnout in the first place.
What to Expect From a Session
Hypnosis is a state of deep, focused relaxation — many clients say it’s the most genuinely restful they’ve felt in months, sometimes years. You remain fully aware throughout. We’ll start with an honest conversation about how burnout or overwhelm shows up for you, what’s driving it, and what recovery would actually look like in your life. From there, sessions are tailored entirely to you, often including specific work on evening wind-down and switching off before bed.
A Client’s Story
“I’d been running on empty for the best part of a year before I admitted it to myself, let alone anyone else. My brain simply wouldn’t stop at night — I’d lie there rewriting emails I’d already sent. After working with Jonathan, the nightly racing thoughts genuinely calmed down within a couple of sessions, and I started sleeping properly for the first time in months. It gave me the space to actually think about what needed to change at work, rather than just surviving day to day.” — C.B., Marylebone
When to Seek Further Support
Hypnotherapy works well as part of a broader approach to burnout recovery, alongside practical changes at work and, where needed, support from your GP — particularly if low mood, persistent anxiety, or an inability to function day-to-day are part of the picture, as burnout can tip into clinical depression or anxiety if left unaddressed. Mental Health UK is a good resource for further information and support around burnout specifically.
