Hypnotherapy for Anger Management

August 3, 2026

Snapping at people you love, replaying an argument for hours afterwards, or feeling your temper rise before you’ve even had a chance to think — anger has a habit of taking over before the rational part of your brain gets a say. If you’ve found yourself regularly saying “I don’t know what came over me,” you’re not alone, and there’s a great deal you can do about it.

I’m Jonathan Garside, an Associate of The Royal Society of Medicine and a member of The National Hypnotherapy Society, with 30 years’ experience as a clinical hypnotherapist practising in London, Singapore, Sydney and New York, now based on Regent Street. Anger management is one of the areas I see real, consistent progress in, precisely because so much of it comes down to an automatic physical response that hypnotherapy is well suited to working with directly.

You’re Far From the Only One Struggling With This

Difficulty managing anger is common, even though it’s rarely talked about openly. Studies suggest around 1 in 10 people in the UK experience anger problems significant enough to affect their lives at some point, and workplace surveys consistently find that a large proportion of people admit to regularly losing their temper at work. Despite this, relatively few people ever seek help — often because anger carries more shame and stigma than other emotional struggles, or because it doesn’t feel like something you’re “allowed” to ask for support with.

If unmanaged anger is affecting your relationships, your work, or your own peace of mind, that alone is reason enough to address it — you don’t need to wait until things reach a crisis point.

Why Anger Feels So Hard to Control in the Moment

Anger is, at its core, your body’s fight-or-flight response. Once triggered, adrenaline and cortisol flood your system, your heart rate rises, and your brain temporarily shifts resources away from calm, rational thinking and towards immediate action. This is exactly why “just calm down” so rarely works in the heat of the moment — by the time anger has taken hold, the part of your brain responsible for measured responses has been temporarily sidelined by a much older, faster survival system.

For many people, this response becomes tied to specific triggers over time — certain phrases, situations, or even particular people — so the same reaction fires again and again, often faster than conscious thought can intervene.

How Hypnotherapy Helps With Anger Management

Hypnotherapy works with the unconscious patterns driving your anger response, rather than relying on willpower in the moment when it’s least available to you. Sessions typically focus on:

  • Lowering baseline physiological arousal, so you’re not starting each day already primed to react.
  • Slowing the trigger-to-reaction gap, creating space between a provocation and your response, so you have a genuine choice in how to react.
  • Identifying and working with underlying triggers, since anger is very often a secondary emotion masking hurt, fear, or frustration underneath
  • Building calmer default responses, using visualisation to rehearse handling familiar triggers with a level head.
  • Strengthening assertiveness, so you can express frustration constructively rather than either suppressing it or exploding.

What to Expect From a Session

You remain fully aware and in control throughout hypnosis — it’s a state of calm, focused relaxation rather than anything mysterious. We’ll start with an honest conversation about your specific triggers, how anger tends to show up for you, and what it’s cost you in relationships or day-today life. From there, sessions are tailored entirely to you, and many clients notice real change within just two to four sessions.

A Client’s Story

“I’d snap at my kids over things that didn’t matter and feel dreadful about it an hour later, every time. I genuinely didn’t feel in control of it. After working with Jonathan, that gap between feeling triggered and actually reacting got noticeably bigger — enough that I could catch myself and choose differently. It’s changed things at home more than I expected.” — P.K., Marylebone

When to Seek Further Support

Hypnotherapy works well for the everyday anger that damages relationships, work, and peace of mind. If anger is regularly leading to violence, threats, or a loss of control that puts you or others at risk, please speak to your GP first, as this needs proper clinical assessment rather than hypnotherapy alone.
